VMware Certified Associate – Data Center Virtualization , Cloud and Workforce Mobility

Recently VMware has launched 3 new certifications aimed at the foundation layer to demonstrate your fundamental understanding of VMware technology in three key areas, being Datacenter Virtualization, Cloud and Workforce Mobility.

The good news is, these exams can be registered for, and taken online, and if your willing to sit the exams before the end of October 2013 Jan 2014, you can use the below voucher to sit all 3 exams for 50% off!

If the voucher does not work for any reason unfortunately there is nothing I can do to assist.

VMware Certified Associate – VCAC510 – Cloud (VCA-Cloud)

The self-paced e-learning class can be found here and taken for free.

VMware Certified Associate – VCAD510 – Data Center Virtualization (VCA-DCV)

The self-paced e-learning class can be found here and taken for free.

VMware Certified Associate – VCAW510 – Workforce Mobility (VCA-WM)

The self-paced e-learning class can be found here and taken for free.

Coming soon there will also be the VMware Certified Associate – Network Virtualization (VCA-NV) for those folk who are focusing on the emerging network virtualization path with NSX (formally Nicira).

So you have nothing to loose, study the free self-paced e-learning classes, register for the exams and sit them at 50% off, in the comfort of your own home.

I sat and passed all three exams yesterday and I must congratulate VMware Education as I feel they have added a entry level certification for those people either starting in virtualization, non VMware partners (customers) who cannot access the VMware Sales Professional (VSP) or VMware Technical Sales Professional (VTSP) tracks, or for people who do not intend going down the technical certification path of VMware Certified Professional (VCP) , VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) or VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX).

I guess for me the exams were pretty easy, but I have had many years experience including administration, implementation and architecture, so the exams are not really designed for people who have already completed, VCP or higher, but the exam questions tests general product knowledge which shows the test taker understands what VMware product helps solve what problem which is a important.

For anyone considering going down the VCP track, VCA is a great starting point and will help build your confidence to tackle the harder VCP (and beyond) exams.

WINNER ROUND ONE: Use of RDMs in Standard IaaS Clusters by Chris Jones @cpjones44

This design decision works around some fairly strict constraints, such as no >2TB LUNs, no IP based storage & the inability for monitoring solution to be customized.

While the decision is ultimately fairly straight forward, the decision documents the issue well and justifies the decision and discusses in depth the implications of the decision.

This is an example of a fairly obvious decision (considering the constraints) but shows even where a decision may be obvious, or the only option, that understanding the implications is important. Documenting even obvious decisions is also important so in the event of movement within the team, the solution can be understood by people not involved in the original design process.

RUNNER UP ROUND ONE: TSM backup configuration for PureFlex environment? By Ash Simpson @Yipikaye1

Not unlike Chris Jones’ decision, Ash’s submission works within the constraints of an existing environment, where hardware and software has already been purchased. This is a common issue, where Hardware / Software is purchased before a detailed design phase. This is a huge problem in the industry and I encourage you all to ensure this trend does not continue. Without a detailed design phase, it is not possible to confirm what hardware/software is required, as such hardware/software should only be purchased after the design to completed.

Again this decision is fairly obvious given the constraints, but the decision explains the benefits of this method of configuration and discusses the implications which is important.

The constraints did not list anything preventing purchasing of a different backup solution, although this is somewhat implied by the assumptions.

Congratulations to Chris Jones @cpjones44 & Ash Simpson @Yipikaye1!

Thank you to everyone who submitted design decisions, and I encourage you all to submit new decisions for Round 2 and am looking forward to new competition participants.

Giving Back to the VMware community

After achieving my VCDX in Toronto mid last year (2012), one of my goals was to start blogging and giving back to the VMware/Virtualisation community which I wrote in my About Me post back in April last year.

Over the last year I presented at multiple VMUG events , contributed to community podcasts and kicked off this blog (CloudXC). I also got more involved with Twitter and VMware Communities forum.

I have also helped a number of VCDX candidates with mock panels and submission reviews and I am very pleased a number of those candidates have been successful.

I am pleased to say I have thoroughly enjoyed getting more involved with the community, and have met a lot of great people and learnt lots of new things along the way.

Today I received notification that along with 574 others, I was awarded the title of vExpert for 2013. (vExpert Awardees announced here)

Just like achieving VCDX, earning the vExpert title for me is just motivation to continually keep improving my skills and adding value to the community.

Thanks to everyone involved with the vExpert Program and I look forward to continuing to contribute too this great community and hopefully get another vExpert gong next year.

Congrats to everyone else who was awarded vExpert for 2013!
